To kick off this post I thought I’d point out the subtle nod
to Mothers day (in the UK); with these ‘Mom’ jeans from Zara.
I spent Mothers
day in Munich’s beautiful Botanical Gardens with the lovely Cohen... we
basically did the whole Mother’s day thing without the Mama’s.*
*NB: All Mothers and Grandmothers were called and or Skyped
after the making of this post!
Rather shamefully I
have never visited the Gardens before; shameful as they are literally ten minutes from my place. Based in the suburbs of Nymphenburg, the gardens have
made home to thousands of striking plants for over one hundred years, I would definitely recommend
a visit if you’re (ever) in Munich.
The sun was shining, the shades were out and
to be honest it would have been rude not to take advantage of the gorgeous
setting. I didn’t feel like I was in Munich, or Germany for that matter, it definitely
had a touch of good ole England about it – ironically more so than the curiously
named ‘Englischer Garten’! It was one of
those days when I wished I could share it with my Grandparents. My Grandad would most definitely appreciate basking in the sunshine whilst admiring the view; my Nan on the
other hand would have probably been observing from the shelter of the
cafe with a nice cup of tea and cake.
Unfortunately it’s not the first time I
have wished I could share an experience with them or someone back home to be
honest, but I guess photo’s will have to suffice and I do have some pretty wonderful friends here to share these memories with.
This week has been a
strange one; I’ve found myself missing the most mundane of activities back home,
visiting my grandparents for a cup of tea, taking my dog for a long walk in
Elmdon Park and chilling on the sofa with the chaos that is my family buzzing
around me. These are definitely emotions that come in pangs and are usually
cured by a cup of Yorkshire tea and a Skype. However this week not so much. I
am really looking forward to my next trip home; tea, cadburys, crumpets, cheese, TV, my bed, my sofa, the park...oh and of course you know friends and
family and all that jip! Aha.
On the contrary I am
also hugely aware that as soon as I am back in the UK, there will be 100 things
I miss about the mighty Munich... so I am becoming accustomed to the feeling. I
read something once said by Miriam Adeney which made me realise how lucky I am, and for that one week in many, this feeling is completely worth it.
“You will never be completely at home again, because part of
your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness
of loving and knowing people in more than one place.”
